“Thanks. I’ll get in touch, if there’s anything else. Could you do me a favor?”

“I’ll certainly try. I don’t want to promise you anything, until I hear what you need.”

“Could you let those two spend the night here? I don’t know that this bunch has friends that would do something else to them, but I surely don’t know that they don’t.”

“I think we can handle that. Thanks for coming out.”

“You’re welcome. Have a good rest of your evening.”

“We’ll try.”

I turned to the ladies. “You heard the man. You’re here ‘til morning.”

Corina asked, “Where will we sleep? I’ve seen your place. I doubt you have a guest room set up.”

“That’s where you’re wrong. I did up another room on the ground floor, when we had a boarder. I’m thinking Mom will probably want you to sleep in the guest room in the main house, though.”

“Is there any chance we could get by without telling them what happened?”

“I doubt it. They will have noticed me taking off like a scared cat, and coming back with you two. Dad might let it slide until I was ready to tell him, but I don’t think Mom will.”

“You’re right about that.”

“Follow me to the house. Don’t worry if it looks like you can’t get through. It’s one of Dad’s illusions.”

“Okay. We’ll follow you.”

I got in the truck, and headed back for the house. When I pulled back into my parking spot, Mom and Dad came onto the porch, and started toward me. I got out, and said, “It’s all taken care of, for now. Just a little more excitement than Corina was wanting to have.”

Corina and Cheryl got out of Cheryl’s car. Corina said, “Hi, sorry to intrude.”

Mom said, “Oh my! You’re covered in blood! Did someone get hurt?”

Corina replied, “I got shot, Ma’am. Mark patched me up. I’m still not sure just how I’m vertical, after as much blood as I lost.”

Mom looked at me. “Mark, you should know better. What if you had passed out, while you were working on her.”

“I was careful, Mom. I quit as soon as I felt weak.”

Corina said, “You gave me your blood?”

“I’m O negative. It was safe.”

“It may be safe, but still yet, you gave me your own blood?”

“You looked bad. You needed some, and I knew it would be okay.”

“Thank you. I knew you saved me, but I didn’t have any idea you did that.”

“I did what had to be done. You would have done the same for me, if you could.”

“I guess.”

Mom asked, “Who’s your friend, Corina?”

Dad said, “That’s Cheryl. She works in the office at Jeff’s machine shop, where Mark used to work.”

Cheryl said, “Nice to see you again, Master.”

“Good to see you, but I wish it were under better circumstances. What’s the plan, Son?”

“Well, the deputy asked me to keep these two here until morning, in case the ones he wound up running in had any friends who might have ideas of revenge, for getting their buddies arrested. I think they would be more comfortable in the guest room, rather than John’s place in the barn.
